CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN
What sufficed for coupling with Tony could never compare to the intense lovemaking Dorothy relished with James. He pleased and satisfied her in ways she had never dreamed of. Her body harmonized with his, the way her voice accompanied his piano. They made love on her dressing room floor, against the wall, in the alleyway, and everywhere and anywhere they could find a moment to be alone. The memory of the taste of his salty sweat filled her with desire and shame. She could not meet Tonyâs eyes when he spoke to her, and when he touched her, she felt her body recoil with revulsion.
From what she knew of Tony, she felt sure that if he discovered her affair with James, he would surely kill him and possibly her. Day after day, she wrestled with the idea of ending the affair, and as soon as James touched or kissed her, she lost all sense of reality.
âI love you, Dot. I want you forever, every night, in my bed. You know we have something special.â
âYes. I do know that.â She touched his face.
âLeave the old man. Heâs too old for you, anyway.â
âI canât. Where would we go? He would find us and kill you, James.â
âIâll take that risk. Letâs go to Canada. Heâd never find us there.â
One night, between sets, James came back to Dorothyâs dressing room to find her in tears.
âI have to go to the hospital. Tony has been shot. The doctors donât think he will make it.â
âDo you want me to go with you?â
âOh, no, please. That would be the worst thing you could do. Just stay here. Iâll be back.â
The hospital smelled of alcohol, and everything seemed whiteâthe nursesâ uniforms, the walls, everything. Dorothy ran to the front desk, her high heels clacking obscenely on the floor, and was directed to Tonyâs room. She raced upstairs to find him attached to tubes and needles on either side but dimly conscious.
âHi, Doll.â His voice came as a raspy whisper.
âTony, what happened?â
He laughed, âJust a minor injury, sorta. Letâs just say itâs a little hazard of the job. But Iâm gonna be just fine.â Speaking seemed to drain what little energy he had. Dorothy sat quietly beside him, holding his hand in both of hers. Tears streamed down her cheeks until the nurse came and said she must leave. Visiting hours had ended.
âI need to speak with you.â Tonyâs driver said
âBut visiting hours are over.â The nurse insisted.
âI canât go until I tell you what I have to tell you, boss.â
Tony nodded. âLet him stay for a few minutes, wonât you, doll?â he said to the nurse. âIâd sure appreciate it.â
The nurse nodded. âAll right. But only one person in the room.â
âIâm sorry, sweetheart. Can you wait in the car for just a few minutes?â Tony suggested.
âSure, Tony. Whatever you want.â Dorothy said.
After she left, Tonyâs driver leaned in and whispered. âI hate to have to you this boss. But I feel like if I donât, you are going to be mad at me.
